LARIMAR – “THE BLUE STONE”
On the Caribbean island of the Dominican Republic, in the coastal province of Barahona, locals found “The Blue Stone” washed ashore on the beaches in this area. It was long believed to be a special gift from the sea. In 1974, a visitors stumbled across this local blue stone and spread knowledge of it around the world. Folks who had heard the predictions of Edgar Cayce, about “an unknown blue stone of incredible beauty and potent healing power and of Atlantean origin will be found in the Caribbean islands”. So many people made this association that Larimar has come to be called both the Atlantis Stone as well as the Dolphin Stone.
Seekers of resource and mining have further investigated, they found the source to be a percolate vein left behind by ancient volcanic activity in the Sierra de Bahoruco (Bahoruco Mountain Range). Washed downriver to the sea, this blue stone would be polished by the sea and then washed ashore, turn up majestically sparkling on the local area beaches and in riverbeds. Visitors from the Peace Corps connected with this rare blue percolate and re-named it Larimar. Seekers have been mining the area since, and this blue and blue green stone is much coveted around the world. The reddish inclusions are evidence of the copper. While percolate is found in many areas of the globe, as a white or greyish mineral stone, the particular geological influences at this spot on Dominica add copper to the volcanic mix, yielding the bright blue coloring. Percolate is a silicate mineral (made of silica) called sodium calcium hydroxide inosilicate. Larimar’s unique volcanic blue coloration, is the result of copper substitution for calcium.
